Our First Adventures in Guyana

Eno Family Mission Report

I am a spectacle.
Everywhere I go, I attract attention. People notice me coming and stare as I walk by. School girls giggle in small huddles when I pass. Some men meet my eye and call out random things. Most, though, just look at me, wondering "Who is this, what is he doing here?"
I don't ask for this attention. I would rather not have it. But I cannot avoid it. I do not fit in here. There is no way for me to blend in with the crowd, to be inconspicuous. If I tried to look and act like them, they would laugh at me. My skin is the wrong color and I am a foot too tall.
Here in Guyana, I stand out for my stature and skin tone. But today this made me think about what else makes me stand out. I am a Christian. I have chosen to turn my back on the world and follow a humble carpenter's son who the world rejected and crucified. I don't fit in here. My life does not blend in with the world's values.
As Christians, we are called to be a peculiar people. To stand out and be noticed because we are not like the rest of the world around us. It's not that we should try to make a spectacle of ourselves. No, that will make a mockery of God. And if you try to blend in, the world will laugh at you, and at your god. But like me as I walk down the street in Georgetown, we attract attention simply because we don't look, act, live, like everyone else. Our "skin" is the wrong color.

Beginning
This is Chris writing. It has been a whirlwind since we arrived in Guyana on November 15. Our first week was spent at the "flight base," an apartment behind Davis Memorial Hospital, in Georgetown. Cas Anderson has given us all the household items her family left here, and they have been stored for the past 2 years in a container behind the hospital. So we immediately took it all out of storage and began to organize what we would need to take with us to Bethany. It was hard looking through it all, remembering how it came to be in our possesion and even why God brought us to Guyana in the first place. But here we are, picking up the banner and marching forward.

Change of plans
On Nov 23, we flew with Capt. Ash out to Paruima. There was a youth congress (essentially a Pathfinder fair) there that weekend, with many representatives from the Guyana Conference planning to attend. Capt. Ash saw it as an opportunity to put together a new plane and pilot dedication, since the two other new pilots live in Paruima. Leading up to the weekend, James had many requests for transport to the youth congress, so on Thursday and Friday, he and Edwin Davidson flew 9113M back and forth between Georgetown several times, then made some flights in the local region. For one flight, James left Edwin in Kaikan in order to carry more people out of there to Paruima, planning on picking him up again later. But after dropping off those passengers and departing Paruima for Kaikan again, the engine started to run rough. So James turned back and landed in Paruima. So now it was Friday afternoon, we had a pilot stranded in Kaikan, and airplane grounded in Paruima. The other airplane was in Georgetown. We had to wait for Sunday morning to start diagnosing the problem, then finally decided James would have to take a boat ride downriver to Kamarang and catch a commercial flight to Georgetown to retrieve the other airplane. So instead of a plane dedication Monday morning, James was on the 5am boat out of Paruima. And we were looking at staying in Paruima several days longer than planned, and poor Edwin was still in Kaikan. Thankfully our bible worker there was able to take care of him until James picked him up on his way back from Georgetown Tuesday evening. And thankfully James was able to get a seat on the first commercial flight out of Kamarang Monday. We arrived back in Georgetown on Wednesday evening. 13M will wait in Paruima until I have a chance to go back out there and finish diagnosing the problem.

Georgetown again
Back in Georgetown, we hit the ground running, since there was less than a week before my dad and another friend from Minnesota arrived to help us get the pilot house in Bethany livable. Shopping and packing was inturrupted by friends from Trinidad coming to town for the weekend. We spent Sabbath with them at the Mission to the Cities training they were part of. We had planned to be in Bethany already by that time, but the delay in Paruima we believe was a God thing. The training inspired us and gave us some fresh hope. And it was good to see friends we had not seen for almost 10 years!

Out to Bethany!
Finally, on Dec 5, we packed several bins and suitcases in a taxi, squeezed all 4 of us into the remaining crevices, and departed Georgetown for our new home. An hour and a half later, we unloaded onto the Parika ferry dock and paid a local man several hundred dollars to carry our stuff onto the ferry that would carry us across the Essiquibo river. Don't choke, the exchange rate is about $200 Guyanese to $1 US. The ferry is a pleasant ride, winding slowly through the jungle-covered islands laid out in the middle of the river. Another hour and a half got us to Supenam where we paid a taxi $500 to carry us about that many yards just around the corner to the boat docks on the Supenam river. Got on Calvin's boat, rode up the Supenam river and Supenam creek, and soon arrived in Bethany village. From the boat dock in Bethany out to the school and airstrip is about 2 miles, so thankfully Calvin and Gail have a toyota 4runner that we packed into and drove out to BMMC.

Mission trip preparation
We are now in the process of preparing for a team of workers to arrive next week to help us get the house repaired enough to live in. My dad and a friend from Minnesota are already here, and my mom and brother arrive tomorrow night. They will help get things together so we can keep the large group busy while they are here. Stay tuned for more about what we are needing to do with the house. Maybe we will be able to get some pictures uploaded as well.

Counting our Blessings

Eno Family Mission Report

Since our last update, many things have happened I will try to be brief as we tell you of all the blessings we have received from God.

God provides before we ask!
Chris was scheduled to leave for Africa September 21st.  Four weeks prior, I mailed Chris's passport to the Chadian embassy with an $150 dollar money order in order to get his visa prior to traveling to Chad.  We had plenty of time and took all the right steps this time (some of you might remember that we had a snafu with Chris's passport and the Chad embassy last time he flew there from the states) so that he should get the passport back in time no problem.  Well I'm not sure what happened but the US postal service lost his passport by delivering it to the correct address but in Washington DC rather than Washington State.  So to say the least, it came to 1 week prior to Chris leaving and no passport.  The US postal service was looking for the passport but was unable to recover it.  Two days prior to his flight, we had to change plans.  Chris rushed to Seattle to get a new passport and then, in that one week, he finished working on several planes he had committed to fixing for friends.  So he flew out to Africa on October 5th for 3 weeks of hard 10 hour days of work.  Where God provided is that after I sent in his passport we received some airplane parts for his Africa trip and after our son and nephew opened the package and hid the contents (I eventually found all the contents), I found an envelope addressed to our ministry for $426 dollars.  After getting the new passport, and paying for a new visa and all the travel to get to Seattle and back etc, we spent $430ish dollars.  God gave us the money we needed.  Praise His Holy Name! Also, he ended up doing more work their then planned, and was able to earn a bit extra to put toward our move to Guyana.

Shipping our Belongings
To ship a barrel from Seattle, Wa it should cost around $220 dollars per barrel.  I was given a phone number for a company based in Florida, so I tried the company.  It took them a little bit to realize I wanted to ship from Washington state rather than Washington DC but they finally found a drop off center in Seattle. I asked for a quote and they said $42 dollars a barrel.  I couldn't believe it.  So I booked the barrels and shared the info with the other missionaries in the area.  The other missionaries got a quote of $216 dollars per barrel.  I was stunned.  I expected a small increase in price as it was prime shipping time but not that much.  So when I called to book the next two barrels, they said $204 dollars per barrel.  Then when I got the quote in the email it was $46 dollars per barrel.  I called the guy back and asked if this was for real.  His response "it sounds like you want to pay more".  I immediate told him I was ok with the price and booked the barrels.  Apparently he was giving me a personal discount.  Our final two barrels ended up being $116 dollars per barrel.  God blessed us.  Insead of paying $1200 dollars total we are ending up paying $410 total.  To God be the Glory!

The final leg of our US tour
Traveling with two little kids is hard. After Chris returned from Africa, we had to get from Washington state to Minnesota before November 14.  This final leg was hard.  We had 2 very long days traveling to Kansas to visit friends and drop off our dog.  We spoke at the church there and made new friends and were able to visit the offices of Garmin to make contacts for getting new equipment for the planes in Guyana.  We ran a half marathon (which we did not train for) and finished before 3 hours.  We then drove to Nebraska to see family and then onto Minnesota to visit more family.  God was with us the entire way.  No accidents, no injuries, no problems.  The Lord is good.

Saying Goodbye to a member of our family
We had planned to take our dog, Ben, to Bolivia with us.  It was cool there, it would be great and he would love it.  This summer I watched Ben struggle with the heat in eastern Washington. We decided he would not have thrived here in Guyana where the temperatures are in the 90s on a regular basis with high humidity.  We had to give up our cats last summer, now we had to say goodbye to our dog.  We were sad.  No one in our immediate family could keep him.  However we didn't know who else to ask.  We had determined to take our dog back to the breeder.  I keep hearing a little voice that said, "mention it on facebook".  I finally gave in and posted it on facebook. Well to God be the glory yet again.  Good friends of ours that we went to college with agreed to take him if we could deliver him to Kansas.  We agreed.  We could not be more happier.  Ben has settled into their family as if he was with us.  He is loving it there and that makes us happy.  It also makes us happy to know that we can visit him anytime we are in the USA.

Ben is so relaxed with them.

This is Bens soon to be 8 foot dog house.  He is going to love it.

December mission Trip

We have 17 people coming to Guyana to help us rebuild/remodel/finish our house and the hanger.  We are so blessed in the outpouring of God's blessings in this group of people.  We look forward to seeing them here soon.

Traveling the USA and More

Eno Family Mission Report

View this email in your browser

We are Back!

Well I guess I am just recovering from the crazy summer we have been having and I am ready to share with you all what we have been up to.

Let me start by saying it has been great seeing so many people, meeting new people and especially sharing the mission God has sent our family on.  It has had its trials, but we have had many more blessings then we can count.  So thank you for taking time out of your lives to spend some of it with us, you have blessed us more then we can express.

Traveling the USA

As of June 1st, we have been in 13 different states.  Yes you understood correctly 13 states.  Whether we drove through them or slept a night there or stayed there for a significant amount of time, we have been getting around by the Grace and protection of God.  Check out the map below to see where we have been.  Can we say CRAZY!!! ok I know you agree don't feel bad, we are aware of how crazy we are.

Sharing with Churches

We were given the opportunity of sharing at 5 different churches.  Some of them we gave full sermons (Scary) and a couple we just did a quick presentation at.  Why do I say scary?  Well I dislike getting up front to speak to people.  I get all nervous, my voice shakes and well I feel like my brain just stops working (thank goodness for notes).  But in the end, God has blessed us.  I have been told by many that our sharing has blessed them or inspired them, but I can only boast how it has changed my life.  God has been working through our sermon to remind me every day that LOVE is what matters the most.  From what I have learned in my worship times and other studies, is that GOD = LOVE.  Thus God is what matters most.  I need him every day in my life.  Chris has shared with me how he is feeling the same way.  So I want to thank you all for changing our lives.  We have put ourselves out there to share with you that each one of you has a mission to do being a disciple of Christ, but even that mission doesn't matter if you don't have LOVE (GOD).  We look forward to returning to those churches we shared at and reconnecting with many of you next summer.

Sharing at Camp Meetings

Three camp meetings were scheduled for this summer.  We shared a 10 min presentation at Minnesota Camp Meeting about Bolivia and our transition to Guyana. We then set up a booth at both the Upper Columbia Camp Meeting in Spangle, Wa and the Soquel Camp Meeting in Central California.  Both places, Chris and I traded off in talking with people and sharing the ministry with those who were interested.  God leads when he is allowed to.  Many different contacts were made that God may use in the future of this mission.  One big thing that we were able to accomplish was to obtain our HAM (Amateur Radio) licenses at the Soquel Camp Meeting. We are officially allowed to talk on the airwaves.  let us know if you are a HAM radio operator and we would love to connect with you on the airwaves.  Our call signs are: Chris: KI7GIU  Crystal: KI7GIT.  We hope in that next summer we may be able to visit or share again at these camp meetings as God leads.

Sharing with you our Supporters

We want to say that we have been so blessed.  We have been given the opportunity to sit down one-on-one with many of the people who pray for us, support us financially, friends, family and those just following our adventures.  God has really strengthened so many relationships this summer that it is sad to leave here soon.  But knowing that we will be able to stay in contact over email, facebook and Skype gives us less pain.  We are looking forward to sharing again with more people next summer.

Join us for a Mission Trip

We have scheduled a mission trip to Guyana.  This will be a building mission trip.  It is always thought that a mission trip is to serve the natives of that country.  Well this trip is different.  This trip is all about building and providing housing for the missionaries that will be living in Guyana.  Because of the blessings God has done, there are more missionaries than there are housing accommodations.  So we are looking for people who are interested in building anywhere from 1 to 3 houses in two different villages in Guyana to please contact us.

The way this mission trip will work is that between the dates of December 11 and January 8th, we are looking for people to come down and build.  you do not have to come the entire time if you are not able to.
We are asking you to contact us by October 10th with your name, the dates you are able to come, any experience you have (building, plumbing, electrical etc) (we can use you even if you have no experience) and a phone number or email that we can contact you with.  We will then see when most people are able to come and try and get a majority of you to fly down together.  If you want to bring several from your church or family or what not, that is great.  The more people the more that will get accomplished.  The total cost for the trip should be around $1000 or less.  This includes round trip airfare, transportation in the USA and Guyana, and food.  Please send us an email at: enoministries@gmail.com or Call us at: 320-300-4250 and leave us a message.  We look forward to seeing you all and showing you around the new mission site.

Thank you again for all your support this summer.  We look forward to sharing \with you in the near future what our plans are and what blessings God has bestowed upon this mission project.

Many Blessings to you all in the Love of Christ
